"As a child, I was something of a loner. My friends were mostly fantasy creatures—odd ones, funny ones, nice ones, nasty ones. They were on call at any and all times, and I was pretty happy with the arrangement. When I started school, however, I realized there was a real world with real people, and that I had better join up. My only problem was that my fantasy folks kept getting in the way; so I made a deal with them—they were to stay out of school, and at all other times I would not only welcome them, I would make them into real-world creatures. It worked fine, and I’ve been doing it ever since."
